Marine Conservation Society

MAGAZINE DESIGN / ILLUSTRATION / PHOTOSHOP

The Marine Conservation Society is the UK’s leading marine environment, not-for-profit organisation. It works for the increased protection of the seas around the United Kingdom, via the creation of well managed marine protected areas.

MCS were looking to refresh the design of their quarterly magazine. After discussing their requirements we were asked to produce their quarterly magazine, ‘Marine Conservation’.

We were tasked with refreshing the design, making it more ‘newsy’ and less technical and bringing the style more up-to-date but without losing the friendly feel that its readers enjoyed.

We looked at the existing design and decided which elements worked and which need changing, we carried out research into different magazine styles and produced a series of ‘typical’ spreads based on our discussions.

We made many and various changes to existing elements such as Masthead size, heading sizes etc.  We introduced more columns to certain pages to give a more ‘newsy’ feel, and we added new and more obvious section headings as well as making subtle design changes to distinguish between regular and feature articles.

Having much experience of working and printing with recycled papers, and knowing of its tendency to soak up ink, flattening image quality, the magazine was vastly improved by our thorough approach to the treatment of all images which had previously been neglected.

The magazine was extremely well received.

Cool Seas

We produced a series of illustrations for part of MCS’s Cool Seas Project, an education project aimed at school children.

Seas full of life

We created a photographic montage that celebrates MCS vision of nature  flourishing in our seas. It has proven to be a useful tool in their campaign to drive political, cultural and social change for healthy seas and coasts.
